What is a domain name?
A domain name is a named address used to identify a website or another internet resource. Its parts are separated by dots, and the hierarchy is read from right to left.

The rightmost part is the top-level domain, or domain extension. Examples are associated with the following purposes or places; registration requirements depend on the extension:
.org and .net – organisations and networks
The second-level domain is the part immediately to the left of the top-level domain. In an address such as google.com, it is the name selected for the domain: google.
A third-level domain is a subdomain, added to the left of the main domain name. A domain can have several subdomains for different sections or services. The following addresses illustrate that structure:
- gsuite.google.com – an example using the gsuite subdomain.
- mail.google.com – the mail subdomain.
- drive.google.com – the drive subdomain.
Registering a domain: a step-by-step example
Domain registration is handled by companies known as registrars.
Here is an example using Beget. Our team has used this service for domain registration. The walkthrough below explains the stages shown in the accompanying illustrations; labels in the current interface may differ.
In the illustrated interface, open the section labelled Domains and subdomains.

Then choose Domain registration, enter the name you want to register and continue to the next step.

Step 2: Enter the registrant’s details
Provide the details of the person or organisation that will hold the domain registration:

Step 3: Review the registration options
On the next screen, select the options you need, check the details and choose Register.

Pay for the registration using an available payment method. Check the result in your account to confirm that the registration has completed.
Once registration is confirmed, you can manage the domain through Beget.

Understanding the registration process
Choosing and registering a domain gives your website a name that people can use to find it.
The steps above explain the main stages of the registration process.
Use the provider’s current instructions when completing the registration and review the details before confirming it.
Even if you ask a specialist to register the domain, understanding the process helps you discuss the budget and the domain’s connection to other services.
